Bathinda, March 7 – Union Food Processing Industry minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal today congratulated Bathinda residents for bagging the top position in the Swach Survey 2019 in Punjab and said this was a direct result of the efficient solid waste management as well as intensive public toilets installed in the city during SAD-BJP tenure.
In a statement here, Mrs Badal said Bathinda city has set an example by securing the first rank in the state and 31st rank in the country among 4,241 cities with 3,520 points in the Swachh Survey-2019. She said this was the result of efficient solid waste management followed by the municipal corporation during SAD-BJP tenure. “The complete overhaul of the collection and transportation, processing, disposal of garbage has paid dividends, she said adding the large number of toilets installed during SAD-BJP tenure to make the city open defecation free had also helped Bathinda bag the top position in Punjab.
Mrs Badal said during the SAD-BJP tenure contracts were given for garbage collection from people’s doorsteps. “An awareness campaign was conducted to sensitize people about the need to segregate garbage and funds were arranged from the Centre under the Swachh Bharat Mission whenever the need arose”.
Speaking about the distinctive look of the Bathinda city in the entire region, Mrs Badal said Bathinda was a picture of neglect before the SAD-BJP took to power in 2007. “After that things started moving in the right direction. Sewerage system facility had been provided to only 40% population till 2007 and it expanded up to 90% population during the SAD-BJP regime. She said that Bathinda saw a sea change in terms of development under Sardar Parkash Singh Badal government.
Talking about the funds flowed to the Bathinda city under the Swachh Bharat Mission, the Union minister said that the cleanliness became the top priority for the people as well as administers of this city during the SAD-BJP regime. “Concrete steps for solid waste management were taken under which an awareness drive was run to make the city Open Defection Free (ODF) besides the contracts were given for door to door garbage collection, a huge number Gents and Ladies toilets were constructed at various parts of the city and funds for 46 tippers were provided to make it a Bin free city.
